Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Block the State of California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
